At Brambletye, curiosity and hands-on learning are taking centre stage with the launch of an exciting new curriculum for the Pre-Prep and Lower School.  This cross-curricular approach, created with the guidance of Primary Matters consultancy, aims to ignite a love for learning by weaving together subjects like English, Geography, History, and Science into engaging, theme-based experiences.

Recently, Year 3 and 4 pupils put their newfound bushcraft skills to the test in a day spent deep in the Brambletye woods as part of their Robin’s Recruits theme.  Guided by a bushcraft expert from Bluebell Bushcraft, the children foraged for wood, crafted bows and arrows, and collaborated to build a campfire, despite the rain and mud.  With teamwork and resilience, they ended the day with warming mugs of soup which they’d prepared over a campfire themselves – an experience that brought learning to life in the most memorable way.

This immersive curriculum style, inspired by the Primary Matters framework, encourages pupils to connect with subjects in meaningful ways.  Each year group kicked off the term with a “Stunning Start” to their theme.  Reception’s journey began with Footprints, sparking curiosity about the world around them, while Years 1 and 2 ventured “Into the Woods” where they delighted in discovering a hidden den. The excitement reached new heights in Year 3 and 4, where Robin’s Recruits launched with a mysterious arrow that “pinned” a map to the wall of the 1933 Hall, setting the stage for a thrilling exploration.

Enriching the experience further, the pupils welcomed a variety of guest visitors, including local farmers, firefighters, and even a live chicken!  A field trip to Bedgebury provided a chance to “Be more tree,” connecting with nature in a deeper way, while the bushcraft day offered a unique opportunity to apply practical skills in the great outdoors.

To showcase this new approach, Brambletye recently hosted a curriculum evening, giving parents the chance to explore classrooms and follow their child’s educational journey from Reception through to Year 4. Those who couldn’t attend are encouraged to reach out to Pre-Prep teachers or Lower School form tutors for more information on this transformative approach.

With this new curriculum, Brambletye continues to inspire, challenge, and support our pupils, equipping them with skills that go beyond the classroom walls.
