Brambletye, founded in 1919, receives no financial support from the Government. To cover our costs and generate a surplus, all of which is invested back in the School, parents are charged a termly fee for the education provided. However, the School Governors are offering two Sports Awards, two Blencowe Creativity Awards and several Foundation Bursaries to help families that, without such assistance, would be unable to send their children to Brambletye.
Foundation Bursaries
A small number of Foundation Bursaries are made each year of up to 100% of the basic fee for the duration of a child’s education. These Bursaries are in place to assist families who otherwise would not be able to consider a Brambletye education. There are, however, two conditions that must be satisfied before any offer can be made. The children must show good academic and all round potential and parents must be able to demonstrate a genuine need for the financial assistance that is being offered.
To ensure criteria are met, an Assessment Day will take place each year to assess potential candidates for their academic suitability for the School. It should be stressed that there is not a competitive element involved in this but it is important that the School is confident that any potential bursary candidates are able to access fully the School’s curriculum.
The Foundation Bursaries are available for boys and girls who are aged between 7 and 11years as of 1st September of the academic year of application. Candidates will be given papers in Mathematics and English. They will also be given a Verbal Reasoning Test and interview. The papers will be based on the National Curriculum criteria at the level appropriate of the candidates concerned.
Blencowe Creativity Awards
The Blencowe Award, named after the Reverend John Blencowe who founded the School, is available to boys and girls with particular talents in art, music and drama. Applicants must show potential in one or two of the following: music, art or drama. Awards of different values, up to a maximum of 33% of the fees, are offered and may be means assessed.
Music
The Blencowe Award offers free music tuition in two instruments for the duration of the pupil’s education at Brambletye. Examiners will look for music potential as well as for existing achievement. There are no written papers: the three requirements being the playing of two pieces, aural tests and sight reading one or more instruments. A strong singing voice would be an additional recommendation. Candidates are encouraged to prepare a song and will be asked to sing at sight.
Art
Candidates are requested to present and talk about their favourite work and will be asked to do some work during the assessment. Each candidate will be given a short interview and a practical drawing test. Art presented may include painting, drawing, print making, pottery and sculpture. Any form of work that shows the candidate has interest and ability is acceptable.
Speech and Drama
Candidates are required to take a small audition where they must perform one speech from a play or recite a poem of their choice. It must be learnt by heart and not read. Candidates will also be asked to sight read a piece of script appropriate to their age group.

Sports Awards
Brambletye offers a Sports Award to a girl and a Sports Award to a boy who show outstanding sporting potential in one or more sports.
Candidates will be expected to take part in a variety of sporting activities over the course of an afternoon. They will be assessed in any sports for which they have a particular ability. Candidates will be invited to arrive the evening prior to the Award Day, held once a year, to sample boarding and what is special about Brambletye.

- The candidate must wish to board at Brambletye when he/she joins the School.
- The candidate must have an active interest in sport – both in and out of school.
